Not everyone finds it easy to take the first step towards better health and wellbeing. For many people, isolation, long-term health conditions or inactivity can make even small lifestyle changes feel overwhelming. Often, what they need most is simple, accessible support and a clear way to get started. That's why Suffolk County Council has launched a new digital service as part of its Active Travel Social Prescribing programme, enabling residents to register their interest in walking, wheeling and cycling activities and take their first steps towards improved physical and mental wellbeing.

A Citizen-Focussed Digital Application

Building on Suffolk's local pilot programme, The Way To Go, the service supports residents to make active travel part of everyday life, not just as a means of transport, but as a pathway to confidence, connection and healthier living. The initiative has been designed to:

  • Reduce inactivity and social isolation
  • Support people living with long-term health conditions
  • Ease pressure on health services
  • Encourage healthier and more sustainable travel choices

Using the GOSS Digital Platform, including Forms and Case Management, Suffolk County Council has delivered a simple, people-first digital application process that makes it easy for both residents and practitioners to access the service online.

The short online form asks users what type of activity they are interested in, walking or wheeling, cycling, or both, and whether the request is being made for themselves or by a practitioner on someone else's behalf. Once these details are provided and the form is submitted, the request is passed to Suffolk County Council's customer services team for review and onward support.

Making a Meaningful Difference

This clear and structured digital journey removes barriers for people who may feel unsure about how to begin improving their health and wellbeing. It also helps council teams manage requests efficiently, ensuring that enquiries are handled consistently and directed to the right support.

The project demonstrates how digital services can have a meaningful human impact when designed around real needs. Rather than focusing solely on technology, the service prioritises wellbeing, inclusion and ease of use, supporting residents from their very first interaction.

The Active Travel Social Prescribing service is a strong example of how local authorities can use digital tools to deliver preventative services that benefit communities while helping to reduce long-term pressure on health and care systems. We're proud to support Suffolk County Council in delivering a service that connects digital transformation with real-world outcomes, helping residents build healthier habits, feel more connected and take positive steps towards better wellbeing.
