We have helped our clients deliver new online services to their citizens including ferry disruptions, improved waste collection solutions as well complex integration into various 3rd party systems.

We are looking for placement students to join our team.

The Role

This exciting role offers you the opportunity work in teams and departments across our business, develop your technical knowledge, and create content that will be read by thousands of our users. You'll work closely with developers and other subject matter experts to gain a holistic understanding of our products, then be able to take that knowledge and tailor the content you create to your target audience. Working under the guidance of our Products and Marketing Managers you will be creating new content, reviewing and updating existing material, using our products to create working examples, and identify and fill gaps in our existing documentation. You'll be creating content and copy published in technical documentation, marketing material, our public websites and social media channels, product user guides and specifications, training resources, bid collateral and API documentation. You will also help in researching current market, industry and competitor trends, using the data collected to help inform the overall GOSS product and marketing strategy. There will be times when you are working independently on projects you identify, and others when you'll be working to meet the deadlines set by other teams. The broad nature of this placement makes it an ideal introduction to careers in technical writing, marketing, copywriting and editing and communications.

The Person

You'll have a keen interest in developing your technical knowledge and in understanding our market and users. You'll be able to write concisely in plain English and be able to adapt your writing style to the content you are creating and the users it is targeted at. You'll have a confident ability in research and analytics and also possess high attention to detail and a need for consistency. The role involves creating example code and script to illustrate your documentation. You'll be expected to develop your knowledge of JavaScript, HTML and CSS, so prior experience would be an advantage. We understand that this role is unlike many others. To make it successful and enjoyable you'll need to be confident, inquisitive, able to say "no", and have a real passion for learning, communicating and knowledge transfer. You'll be fully supported by our Products Manager, Technical Author, Marketing Manager and developers.

What's it like to do your placement and to work at GOSS?

Dominic Youel, a Plymouth Uni graduate, who did his placement with GOSS and now works as a permanent member of the team, said:

"My mentor is excellent, and I have learned a huge amount. I've been encouraged to use my creativity. It's a very relaxed place to work. Everyone sat around me is highly experienced and free cake is startlingly common. Oh, and one afternoon, I saw a huge herd of deer grazing outside my window - not many software companies can offer that!"
