- A benchmark group of ten geographically dispersed benchmark websites
The results of this testing have revealed interesting observations in terms of the performance and availability of websites hosted by clients in contrast to those achieved by GOSS. Compared to sites hosted by GOSS, self-hosted sites often under-perform on two key metrics: site availability and response time.

This presentation shows the situation before and after a client switched from self-hosting to hosting with GOSS.
Availability
The availability chart shows a self-hosted client before and after moving their website hosting to GOSS.
The site availability (whether users can access the site) was very erratic prior to moving the hosting to GOSS in mid January. The data is for the same website running the same version of GOSS iCM. When self-hosting the client never averaged much over 97% availability and would dip as low as 75-80%. In contrast, sites hosted by GOSS average over 99.8% availability.
Response time
The response time chart shows the same self-hosted client before and after moving their website hosting to GOSS.
The site response time (how quickly the site loads into a browser) was very erratic prior to moving to GOSS in mid January. The data is for the same website running the same version of GOSS iCM. The client never averaged much faster than 300ms (milliseconds) and would peak as high as 800-1000ms. In contrast, sites hosted by GOSS average under 160ms response time.
Insight
Website users have come to expect a certain level of website availability and response time on the sites they visit. Hosting a website is a specialist service that requires a considerable amount of time and money invested to be effective and efficient. There are numerous hardware, software, security, monitoring and staff considerations - 24/7/365 - and that is assuming there are no disasters that affect traffic or hosting.
By switching to a reliable proven provider the client was able to trust GOSS to deliver exceptional results, leaving the client to concentrate on their core activities. The standard elements of the GOSS hosting solution would be challenging for any non specialist organisation to meet and have been continuously developed and rigorously tested over the last ten years.

GOSS custom built a hosting package and devised the optimum solution accommodating the precise and individual needs of the client. Policy and procedure considerations were addressed through the selection of appropriately secure connectivity and protocol choices.
